How to Obtain a Permit
The Harris County Fire Marshal does not create or issue building permits. To obtain a permit please:
visit the
Harris County Permit
website
call 713-956-3000 and ask for the permits department
Request a Final Inspection
Step 1:
Prepare for the inspection
by having all elements of the building completed and ready for occupancy.
The Fire Marshals inspection will require that you have "temporary permanent" power. (Meter set and full power for a limited amount of time.)
Once the inspection is complete and the structure is approved for occupancy, the Harris County Permits office will release permanent power to the structure.
Step 2:
Have the approved set of plans (as builts)
available for the inspector to review during the inspection.
Step 3:
Have your permit
available for reference.
You can not request a final inspection without your permit number and type of permit (both of which are found on the permit).
If you have not received a permit or can not find your permit, please call Harris County Permits at 713-956-3000.

Harris County Code Word
The Harris County building official and the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office worked together to develop a list of codeword interpretations. The purpose of these interpretations are to explain sections of the fire code that may otherwise be unclear. To view these interpretations, please view the
Harris County Codeword
page. If you have found something in the fire code that you believe needs further explanation, please click here to
suggest a codeword interpretation
. Be sure to include the specific fire code reference for which you need an interpretation.
