Inspection Application
Definition
An assisted living location (also known as residential board and care) houses persons 18 years or older. The facility is licensed for 4 or more residents. If you have less than 4 residents and are not licensed you may use the same inspection form. To find out more information about licensing questions contact the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services. The following applies for all assisted living facilities located in Harris County but outside city limits. To find out if you are in unincorporated Harris County (our jurisdiction) use our

New Construction
All new construction of assisted living facilities in the unincorporated areas of Harris County requires a building permit. Click here to

Existing Facilities
To qualify as an existing facility, you must meet ALL of the following criteria:
Your facility must have been built before 1/1/2005.
Your facility must have been in continuing operation
as an assisted living facility
since 1/1/2005.
You must have been inspected by the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office within the last year. Inspections by a different department or jurisdiction will not be substituted.
If you do NOT meet all of the above criteria, you must
obtain a building permit
.
If you DO meet all of the above criteria, please do the following to receive your inspection:
Call the office for a checklist to make sure your facility is compliant.
View the
fee schedule
.
Fill out a
fire inspection application
.
Send the completed inspection application to the address on the application along with one of the following forms of payment payable to the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office:
Cash
Money Order
Cashier's Check
Wait for a fire inspector to contact you (usually 2-4 weeks).
